Conceived as the Woodstock of the West, unfortunately, the show ended tragically for many reasons. The concert was held on December 6 at the Altamont Speedway, with about 300,000 people attending. Jorma Kaukonen, the lead guitarist of Jefferson Airplane, who wanted to expose the Stones to the San Francisco music scene, thought up the idea of a free concert at Golden Gate Park. However, the concert organization started to break down once the City of San Francisco got wind of the event's size and refused to issue permits. So, the promoters on December 5 changed the concert's location to Altamont Speedway, creating significant confusion around the event.

$10,000 Reward Offered

The poster, printed locally, features a stock photo of the Rolling Stones with venue information added at the bottom. The layout comes in three colors - yellow, orange, and two shades of green. It went to print on the day before, so there was no time to hang the posters around the city to advertise the upcoming festival. Instead, they sold them for $1 at the show and gave out leftovers after the festival ended. The Altamont poster was the last Rolling Stones concert poster printed in the 1960s.
