The Rolling Stones Come to North Carolina in 1965

The British band the Rolling Stones continued their invasion of America by coming to North Carolina in November 1965, playing shows at Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro. The Stones played Raleigh first on November 10, 1965, at N.C. State’s Reynolds Coliseum. They played Greensboro the next night and Charlotte on the 15th. Their tour also took the band to Tulsa, Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Shreveport, Dallas and Fort Worth. Maybe by the time they finished the Southern leg of their Second U.S tour, they picked up a southern accent.

All the Stones were in the 20s in 1965. A young man named Ed “Charlie Brown” worked at the local radio station in Raleigh and picked up the Stones at the airport. They started talking about R&B music and ended up at Brown’s apartment to check out his record collection. They even picked up a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken on the way to Reynolds Coliseum. Listening to records and eating fried chicken is what 20 year olds did back then.

The Reynolds audience liked the whole show. The crowd enjoyed Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. Most commented on the pure energy the Stones brought to the stage, and they felt fortunate to hear the Stones play their blues-based early music. When the Stones took the stage, all hell broke loose. The band opened with Solomon Burke’s “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” and when Mick Jagger sang, “I need you, you, you…,” pointing to various areas of fans, the crowd went wild, rushing the stage.

Local media, however, came away underwhelmed. Maybe the writers were fatigued from Beatlemania a year earlier and were taken back from the Stone’s hard-hitting rock n roll style. The local paper’s headline was “Rolling Stones Roll on After Loud Show Here,” and found little good to say about the show. The writers at the News & Observer and the North Carolina State University school papers did not get the Stones, but the band is still around making great music 55 years later.

Globe Printing from Baltimore, Maryland, printed the tour blanks for the tour. Globe used bright colors with a stock photo of the band. Their top singles "Satisfaction" and "Get off My Cloud" are printed on the layout. Other artists listed are the Vibrations who had a hit song called "My Girl Sloopy" Lower on the poster lists Patti and the Blue Belles. The Rocking Ramrods played back up for both the Vibrations and the Blue Belles.
