Eire Apparent- Opening Act For Jimi Hendrix 1969 German Tour
The Gunther Kieser Jimi Hendrix poster states that the concert was presented by LIPPMANN + RAU. LIPPMANN + RAU was formed in the mid-1950s by Fritz Rau and his partner Horst Lippmann to promote jazz and blues concerts featuring American artists in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1962, their American Folk Blues Festivals introduced European audiences to America music featuring Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Lonnie Johnson, Big Joe Williams, John Lee Hooker, Skip James, Little Walter, Buddy Guy, and Memphis Slim. Many young aspiring musicians such as Mick Jagger, Eric Burdon, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood attended their shows.
Jimi Hendrix was at the height of his popularity when LIPPMANN + RAU signed him to tour Germany in January 1969. They hired Gunther Kieser to create a tour blank to advertise the show in Germany, Austria, and France. The Kieser poster is probably one of the most recognized concert posters in rock history and lists Eire Apparent as the opening act at the bottom. Ex-Animal Chas Chandler, with his partner Mike Jeffery, managed both Jimi Hendrix and Eire Apparent. So it makes sense that Eire Apparent joined the Hendrix tour in Germany since Chandler and Jeffery managed both acts.
Hendrix produced and played guitar on the Eire Apparent's only album called Sunrise. Hendrix used Eire Apparent as a vehicle for more pop-oriented sounds, mixing softer sounds with a strong psychedelic influence. The album sold well because of Hendrix's contribution but did not produce a hit single hit to drive sales. Eire Apparent broke up at the start of 1970. The band's guitarist, Henry McCullough, backed Joe Cocker and later became a member of Paul McCartney's Wings.
